Samsung’s new OLEDoS screen promises an immersive XR experience

Samsung is known for its innovative display technologies, and the company has recently unveiled a new type of screen that could revolutionize the XR (extended reality) industry. The screen, called OLEDoS (Organic Light Emitting Diode on Silicon), is a micro display that has a stunning pixel density of 3,500ppi, which is equivalent to viewing a 4K screen in an XR headset.

The OLEDoS screen is a 1.03-inch square panel that is made by applying organic materials on a silicon wafer. It also features an RGB sub-pixel structure, which means that each pixel has red, green, and blue sub-pixels. This allows for more accurate and vivid colors, as well as higher contrast and brightness. Samsung claims that the OLEDoS screen does not need a separate light source, which makes the visuals more realistic and natural.

The OLEDoS screen is designed to be used in XR headsets, which combine virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to create immersive and interactive environments. Samsung has not revealed the specifications of its upcoming XR headset, but it is likely that it will use two OLEDoS screens, one for each eye, to create a 3D effect. The company also has not disclosed the frame rates that the OLEDoS screen can support, but it is expected that it will be at least 90Hz, which is the minimum required for a smooth and comfortable XR experience.

Samsung’s OLEDoS screen is the result of its acquisition of eMagin, a US-based OLEDoS display manufacturing firm, a few months ago. eMagin specializes in making OLEDoS screens for military applications, such as helmets and night vision goggles. Samsung hopes to leverage eMagin’s expertise and technology to create consumer-oriented XR products that can compete with other players in the market, such as Facebook, Apple, and Sony.

Samsung is currently showcasing its OLEDoS screen, along with other display innovations, at the CES 2024 expo in Las Vegas. The company has not announced the launch date or the price of its XR headset, but it is expected that it will be available sometime later this year. Samsung’s OLEDoS screen could be a game-changer for the XR industry, as it offers a high-resolution, high-performance, and high-quality display that could enhance the user’s immersion and enjoyment.
