Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4: The first 3 nm Android smartphone chip with Oryon CPU

Qualcomm, the leading mobile chipmaker, is reportedly working on its next-generation flagship processor, codenamed Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The new chip is expected to launch in 2024 and will be the first smartphone processor to use the 3 nm process node from TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor foundry.

The 3 nm process node will enable Qualcomm to pack more transistors into a smaller area, resulting in higher performance, lower power consumption, and improved efficiency. According to some estimates, the 3 nm process node could offer up to 25% more performance or 30% less power than the 4 nm process node, which is currently used by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and the Apple A16 Bionic.

But the 3 nm process node is not the only thing that makes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 stand out. The new chip will also feature Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU cores, based on the Nuvia Phoenix architecture that the company acquired in 2021. The Oryon CPU is said to offer up to 40% faster performance than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, with a 2+6 core configuration (2x Phoenix I plus 6x Phoenix M).

The Phoenix I core is designed for high-performance tasks, such as gaming, video editing, and artificial intelligence. It is expected to run at a peak frequency of 3.2 GHz and deliver a single-core Geekbench 5 score of over 2000, which would rival the Apple A-series processors. The Phoenix M core is designed for efficiency and background tasks, such as web browsing, social media, and music streaming. It is expected to run at a peak frequency of 2.5 GHz and deliver a single-core Geekbench 5 score of over 1000, which would surpass the current ARM Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 cores.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will also include a new Adreno GPU, a new Hexagon DSP, a new Spectra ISP, a new FastConnect modem, and a new Secure Processing Unit. The details of these components are not yet known, but they are likely to offer significant improvements over the previous generation. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will support 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, LPDDR5X memory, UFS 4 storage, and USB 4.0 connectivity.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to power the flagship smartphones from Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and other Android OEMs in 2024. The new chip will offer a huge leap in performance, efficiency, and features, and will challenge the dominance of Apple in the smartphone market. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could be the first smartphone chip to truly create a mini-computer in your pocket.
