Apple is working on two foldable iPhone prototypes, report says

Apple is reportedly developing two foldable iPhone prototypes, according to a new report from AppleInsider. The report cites sources familiar with the matter, who claim that Apple is testing different hinge designs and folding configurations for its future devices.

One of the prototypes is said to be similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Motorola Razr Plus, which have a clamshell shape that folds vertically. The other prototype is said to be more like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Google Pixel Fold, which have a book-like shape that folds horizontally.

The report also claims that Apple is facing some challenges with the durability and screen creasing of the foldable displays, which are supplied by Samsung. Apple is reportedly experimenting with a unique hinge design that would allow the display to fold without a visible crease.

Apple has not officially confirmed or denied the existence of a foldable iPhone, but there have been several rumors and patents that suggest the company is interested in the technology. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a reliable track record of predicting Apple’s plans, has said that Apple could launch a foldable iPhone in 2025 or later.

Kuo also said that the foldable iPhone could have an 8-inch display and use a silver nanowire touch solution, which would give it a competitive edge over other foldable devices. Kuo believes that foldable smartphones are the future of the mobile industry and that Apple will be a major player in the market.

However, some analysts have expressed doubts about the demand and feasibility of a foldable iPhone, given the high cost and low durability of the current foldable devices. TechRadar’s Roland Moore-Colyer wrote that Apple may be waiting for the foldable technology to improve and become more mainstream before entering the market.

He also noted that Apple has a history of ignoring some trends and sticking to its own vision, such as the lack of a touchscreen laptop or a 5G iPhone until recently. He argued that Apple may not need a foldable iPhone to stay ahead of the competition, as long as it continues to deliver high-quality and innovative products.

Whether or not Apple will release a foldable iPhone remains to be seen, but it is clear that the company is exploring the possibility and working on some prototypes. If Apple does decide to launch a foldable iPhone, it will likely be a game-changer for the smartphone industry and a challenge for its rivals.
